THE VIRTUE – TRAP QUIZ

  1. The biggest lack in my life is harmony.
  2. The greatest joy in my life is music / art.
  3. My largest time commitment is work.
  4. As I play more, I work more?

FORBIDDEN JOYS, AN EXERCISE

One of the favored tricks of blocked creatives is saying no to ourselves. It is astonishing the number of small ways we discover to be mean and miserly with ourselves. When I say this to my students, they often protest that this is not true — that they are very good to themselves. Then I ask them to do this exercise.

List ten things you love and would love to do but are not allowed to do. Your list might look like this: Go dancing. Carry a sketchbook. Roller – skate. Buy new cowboy boots. Streak your hair blond. Go on vacation. Take flying lessons. Move to a bigger place. Direct a play. Take life – drawing class.

Very often, the mere act of writing out your list of forbidden joys breaks down your barriers to doing them. Post your list somewhere highly visible.

  1. Pottery
  2. Kapa Haka
  3. Travel
  4. Make or buy costumes and clothes
  5. Paint with Oils
  6. Study Cultural Anthropology / Arts

WISH LIST, AN EXERCISE

  6. I could dance
  7. to move abroad
  8. to travel
  9. to be safe
  10. to learn how to drive
  11. for health and no pain
  12. for no inconveniences
  13. for a happy and cozy home
  14. for a loving family
  15. for self esteem
  16. for a powerful passport
  17. for powerful indestructive electronics
  18.  comfortable practical good quality fashionable clothes
  19. to be taken care of without worrying about being in debt
  20. I most especially wish for freedom

  • One more time, list five imaginary lives. Have they changed? Are you doing more parts of them? You may want to add images of these lives to your image file.

  1. A new puzzle
  2. Gouache
  3. Someone or something to clean after me when I craft, hehe
  4. iPad for Procreate
  5. Small cozy homes in different continents
  6. Strong passport

  12. Freedom
  13. A pet
  14. Pet farm
  • Honestly, my favorite creative block is… (TV. overreading. friends. work. rescuing others. over exercise.) You name it. Draw yourself indulging in it.

Social media, depression, trauma, money. Money, time, trauma, security, self esteem, lack of independence.

  • My payoff for staying blocked is. This you may want to explore in your morning pages.

Not doing the work, staying in my comfort zone. Being depressed, not doing what I want to, feel stuck, hot free.

  • The person I blame for being blocked is… Again. use your pages to mull on this.

Father, parents, family, society.

Kia Ora everyone! This was a very eventful month. Given that it’s summer in New Zealand and we’ve been trying to go out as often as we can to take advantage of the few sunny days we get a year. I’ve also been reading The Artist Way, a book that has weekly artist dates and tasks that challenge you to be more in tune with your creative self. Both of this things have prompt Jono and me to keep active and moving and you’ll see just that throughout this post.

Trip up north

We started the month going for a trip up north from Wellington. We were originally heading to Waitomo Caves but didn’t realize there was going to be a passing storm through most of the North Island of New Zealand! We ended up finding refuge in New Plymouth to then head to the Tongariro National Park area for some quick camping and hikes. Half of this trip was done in December so have a look at that blog to find out about our camping experience in the Lower North Island West Coast, Festival of Lights in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth and more!

Wellington Zoo

We really did feel the rush after a great camping and hiking start of the year and we tried to keep going out and getting some sunshine as much as we could. On the same first week of January we used up some vouchers from Wellington Council’s Holiday Advent Calendar. This was one of our best uses of the advent calendar (aside from the Sixes and Sevens donuts!).

Mount Kaukau

This was one of the most groundbreaking points of my mental health journey so far. It was the realization that I’m freer than what I’ve been so far in New Zealand. I felt full physically and emotionally and it was a great start of the year to motivate me to keep doing things for my wellbeing.

I even wrote and shared a motivational post on my social media where I told my story of pain and depression from the past years and I was pleasantly surprise with the positive response of people on something that has been dragging and bringing me shame for such a long time.

Cricket

Another day where we pushed ourselves to go out and get some sun, we walked towards the movie theater ready to watch a movie but noticed it was too sunny to be locked in a dark room for a few hours. It was supposed to start raining in the middle of January but it didn’t and we made sure (again) to stay out as much as we could. This walk was redirected to the Cricket game. It was my first ever Cricket game! It included a woman’s and a man’s game in the day and a few salty treats to complete our little picnic towel for the few hours we were there.

READING DEPRIVATION, AN EXERCISE

Reading deprivation casts us into our inner silence. a space some of us begin to immediately fill with new words — long. gossipy conversations. television binging. the radio as a constant, chatty companion. We often cannot hear our own inner voice. the voice of our artist’s inspiration, above the static. In practicing reading deprivation, we need to cast a watchful eye on these other pollutants. They poison the well. Take the next 7 days off from reading and outside chatter.

TASKS

  • Environment: Describe your ideal environment. Town? Country? Swank? Cozy? One

paragraph. One image. drawn or clipped. that conveys this. What’s your favorite season? Why? Find an image of this or draw it. Place it near your working area.

Maybe a colonial cute looking town with nearby access to nature walks and artsy shops with private comfy little areas, cafes, and community. Georgetown, Ipoh, Malacca. Cottage? Tiny house.

My favorite season used to be autumn in Mexico. In New Zealand, it’s summer for sure. I also like mid-late spring when it’s warm enough but lots of flowers.

  • Time Travel: Describe yourself at eighty. What did you do after fifty that you enjoyed? Be very specific. Now. write a letter from you at eighty to you at your current age. What would you tell yourself? What interests would you urge yourself to pursue? What dreams would you encourage?

Dear 26 year old me,

I’ve done lots of slow travel, connecting with like minded people, connecting cultures together. Inspire people with my way of thinking. Doing and attending art and cultural workshops. Having a balanced (plentiful) life. I’m healthy, mentally able, content, relaxed on a property with plants, trees, animals, colorful things. Colonial, rustic, cozy and with lots of pets.

You’re doing a great job. You have grown so much and understand so much about life and keep growing and expanding your understanding. We became a cultural anthropologist, social justice and behavioral psychologist and kept traveling the world, helping people learn and understand themselves and each other. You’ve done so many things, art, theater, dance, you name it! People love you. We’re still active and in good health. Thanks for taking care of yourself when you were young.

Keep the good work! You’re on the right path.

Love, 80 year young you

  • Time Travel: Remember yourself at eight. What did you like to do? What were your favorite things? Now. write a letter from you at eight to you at your current age. What would you tell yourself?

Hi,

I like singing and want to be a singer! And dressing up, don’t forget to dress up! Wigs and toys. I am so good at so many things and I want to try everything! You better do all the things and have many animals! I want a farm and a greenhouse and a retirement home, animal shelter and an orphanage all together so that they keep each other company! I also want to be a gymnast and an athlete and a child star. I can sing better than the kids on the tv. Don’t know what people see in them.

Cecy!

  • Environment: Look at your house. Is there any room that you could make into a secret. Private space for yourself? Convert the TV room? Buy a screen or hang a sheet and cordon off a section of some other room? This is your dream area. It should be decorated for fun and not as an office. All you really need is a chair or pillow. something to write on. some kind of little altar area for flowers and candles. This is to help you center on the fact that creativity is spiritual. not an ego. issue.
  • Use your life pie (from Week One) to review your growth. Has that nasty tarantula changed shape yet? Haven’t you been more active? less rigid. more expressive? Be careful not to expect too much too soon. That’s raising the jumps. Growth must have time to solidify into health. One day at a time. you are building the habit patterns of a healthy artist. Easy to do. List ongoing self – nurturing toys you could buy your artist: books on tape. magazine subscriptions. theater tickets. a bowling ball.
  • Write your own Artist’s Prayer. Use it every day for a week.
  • An Extended Artist Date: Plan a small vacation for yourself. (One weekend day. Get ready to execute it.)
  • Open your closet. Throw out — or hand on, or donate — one low – self – worth outfit. (You know the outfit.) Make space for the new.

I gave one of my best friends a stretchy blouse and it was really perfect because it’s a stretchy shirt that would last her for when her belly grows from her pregnancy! It was nice to give something away and tick it for this task but then she gave me this news. It was quite wholesome and symbolic in a way. Also (synchronicity) considering the same day or day before, at work we’ve been talking about the idea of nannying for the winter.

Check-In

  • Look at one situation in your life that you feel you should change but haven’t yet. What is the payoff for you in staying stuck?
  • If you break your reading deprivation, write about how you did it. In a tantrum? A slipup? A binge? How do you feel about it? Why?

Yesterday (Thursday) I put on a podcast while I was cooking. The day before I felt a bit of withdrawal and my period was coming. I did so well the first couple of days and I’ve been continuously doing other things that are good for me and Jono so I didn’t want to be so hard on and I gave myself a break. Jono and I started watching the Crown. I didn’t count the media I watched with Jono because that was time shared together but at this point I also don’t want to be too hard on myself.

Without further a do, let’s have a look at these weeks’ check in!

Morning Pages

  • How many days this week did you do your morning pages?

7/7 days. Word count: Mon 525, Tue 793, Wed 733, Thu 510, Fri 757, Sat 623, Sun 750

Artist Dates

  • Did you do your artist date this week? What did you do? How did it feel?

This week, my artist day was a mix between the Inner Compass task, the artist date and me wanting to finish a few of my projects. I drew the New Zealand Alebrije with crayons and I then started with the base figure of the Alebrije with recycled paper.

I realized I’ve been drawing New Zealand birds and I haven’t drawn anything Mexican so the next day, I drew an axolotl and a quetzal. Will be coloring the eagle, snake and xoloitzcuintle at some point.

I also almost finished my army of Georges and I think it was last week that I started poking holes at my corsets to make the grommet openings.

Tasks

  • Describe your childhood room. If you wish, you may sketch this room. What was your favorite thing about it? What’s your favorite thing about your room right now? Nothing? Well, get something you like in there — maybe something from that old childhood room.

I think I like my room now better. If I’d take something from my room at my parents house now (not childhood) would be my alebrijes, maybe the dolls. But I do have plushies and similar things here, just not the same things. Maybe I need to make the alebrijes I’ve been wanting to make.

Costumes, masks, memorabilia, clothes, gifts and memories from friends and family, simple and rustic, private, playful, colorful, cozy, girly, Mexican. White walls, individual bed, open home made closet, big window, cluttered.

  • Describe five traits you liked in yourself as a child.
  1. Confident, headstrong
  2. Outspoken
  3. Do what I please and don’t mind the suggestions or opinions of others
  4. Unhinged, no filters
  5. Trusting
  • List five childhood accomplishments. (straight A’s in seventh grade. trained the dog. Punched out the class bully. short – sheeted the priest’s bed). And a treat: list five favorite childhood foods. Buy yourself one of them this week. Yes. Jell – O with bananas is okay.
  1. Good class projects
  2. Aslan doberman dog, Goku and Led Zeppelin drawings
  3. Won best costume in relaciones culturales
  4. Won voucher at independence competition in highschool
  5. Won best stand at Tourism Show
  6. Oaxacan Festival 27 may 2018
  1. Albóndigas / Frijoles a la charra
  2. Conchas / Hot chocolate / Arroz con leche / Glorias / Bombones choco nuez
  3. Popcorn / Takis / Chapulines / Totopos
  4. Maruchan / Sopa knorr
  5. Elote
Conchas, mexican bread
  • Habits:

Take a look at your habits. Many of them may interfere with your self – nurturing and cause shame. Some of the oddest things are self – destructive. Do you have a habit of watching TV you don’t like? Do you have a habit of hanging out with a really boring friend and just killing time? Some rotten habits are overt (drinking too much. smoking. Eating instead of writing). List three obvious rotten habits. What’s the payoff in continuing them? Some rotten habits are more subtle (no time to exercise. little time to pray. always helping others. not getting any self – nurturing. hanging out with people who belittle your dreams). List three of your subtle foes. What use do these forms of sabotage have? Be specific.

  1. Doom scroll – kill time, not being present
  2. Being emotionally reactive to practical things – always on edge
  3. Bad posture and not stretching – overdoing things and being in pain
  • Make a list of friends who nurture you — that’s nurture (give you a sense of your own competency and possibility). not enable (give you the message that you will never get it straight without their help). There is a big difference between being helped and being treated as though we are helpless. List three nurturing friends. Which of their traits serve you well?
  1. Mariana – listens and provides life experiences
  2. Sele – share similar problems but different with mental health and is a poet
  3. Valentina – share similar immigrant problems and is grounded
  • Call a friend who treats you like you are a really good and bright person who can accomplish things. Part of your recovery is reaching out for support. This support will be critical as you undertake new risks.
  • Inner Compass: Each of us has an inner compass. This is an instinct that points us toward health. It warns us when we are on dangerous ground. Morning pages are one way to contact it. So are some other artists – brain activities — painting. driving. walking. scrubbing. running. This week, take an hour to follow your inner compass by doing an artist – brain activity and listening to what insights bubble up.
  • List five people you admire. Now. list five people you secretly admire. What traits do these people have that you can cultivate further in yourself?
  1. Carla Morrison / Natalia Lafourcade / Shakira
  2. Jane Goodall
  3. Chiara Bautista / Lora Zombie
  4. Anne of Green Gables / Luna Lovegood / Claire Fraiser
  5. Hello

Unique, sensitive, creative, imaginative, kind, open minded

  • List five people you wish you had met who are dead. Now. list five people who are dead whom you’d like to hang out with for a while in eternity. What traits do you find in these people that you can look for in your friends?
  1. Oscar Wilde / Edgar Allan Poe
  2. Albert Einstein
  3. Homero Gómez / Steve Irwin
  4. Princesa Diana
  5. Bob Ross / Vincent van Gogh

Kind, caring, sensitive, curious, creative, talented, strong will

  • Compare the two sets of lists. Take a look at what you really like and really admire — and a look at what you think you should like and admire. Your should might tell you to admire Edison while your heart belongs to Houdini. Go with the Houdini side of you for a while.

I see I really connect and admire people like me who maybe suffer for caring too much or being sensitive and unique but they still got to do their thing and fight for what they cared for and are / were recognized and loved for it. Even if people with other personalities see them as liabilities or people who are not apt for the way of life nowadays. These people are the ones who fight and care for things bigger than their own interests. Even though what they do interests them, they’re not pursuing those things for personal gain but for connection and to protect what can’t protect itself.

Check-In

  • Did you experience any synchronicity this week? What was it?

The comments on the art gallery wall saying “you can do hard things” when I was thinking this was a lot of work and I felt like even if I did all of it, it might not help me long term. Also people reached out when I posted things on social media since one of the tasks this week was to reach out / call a friend.

○ Were there any other issues this week that you consider significant for your recovery? Describe them.

Just that thought about it not helping me after I’m done but it was very quickly addressed. Also my wisdom tooth removal made the childhood food task be pushed for next week. And I didn’t really go outside for walks or do any physical exercise. I know it was because of my wisdom tooth pain and exhaustion from work (I had work everyday this week) but I did have enough energy and time to push myself to go out but I didn’t.

Going into weeks 4, 5 & 6

  • Morning pages

I do want to give writing the morning pages by hand a go but I don’t want to push it too much otherwise, I’d be in pain for a while and use that hand energy and time in writing other than in actually making things which defeats my purpose for this process of being a bit more creatively free and spontaneous with my art (and that involves using my hands).

I would also like to take away distractions and try to make it first thing in the morning more often Maybe going out if the weather permits or to the library or a coffee shop to write and make a thing out of it, of course (probably) not every day.

  • Artist Dates

I do want to be more intentional with the artists ways (same as the morning pages) and take it outside. I haven’t been preparing anything special for these past weeks, I’ve only been doing projects that I have laying around at home. I want to do artists dates that don’t involve the making of the art itself.
