Embers Spark: The First Flickers of Light

There was a time when my fire dimmed to embers—glowing faintly, barely holding on. Depression has a way of doing that, making the world feel muted, like a dream you can’t quite wake up from. I wasn’t lifeless, but I wasn’t fully living either. Just existing, like a coal that once burned bright but was now just warm enough to remind me of what once was.

And then, something shifted.

It wasn’t a grand explosion of light, no sudden epiphany or dramatic turning point. It was small steps. Slow at first—a spark here, a flicker there. A moment of laughter that felt real. A new experience that made my heart beat a little faster. A glimpse of curiosity, a whisper of joy. But the flame was still fragile, uncertain. Some days it felt like it might catch, and others, like it might fade away again.

Still, I fed the embers with kindling: small adventures, creativity, movement, and connection. I explored, just a little. I sang, quietly at first. I built, tentatively. I rediscovered pieces of myself I had almost forgotten. And though the fire wasn’t roaring yet, I could feel the warmth growing, the promise of something more.

This year, I took the first steps. I reminded myself of what joy could feel like, even if only in glimpses. The spark that had once diminished flickered back to life—not yet a full bloom, but something stirring beneath the surface, waiting for its time.

If you’ve ever felt like your light has dimmed, know this: embers are not the end. They are the beginning. They hold warmth, potential, and the promise of something more. Give yourself time, space, and whatever fuels your soul, and watch—slowly, beautifully—as the light returns.

Here’s to the first flickers of light. Here’s to the bloom that will come.
