Hello and welcome to this Artist Way check in Week 5. The Artist Way is a book written by Julia Cameron that is meant to guide artist and creatives of all walks of life through a 12 week process of self discovery and unlock of your creative freedom. If you’re curious to know more about it, check out my blog where I describe the different components of the 12 week journey and tools included in the book.

The weekly check ins in this blog answer the questions Julia asks to put your progress into perspective. I added the weekly tasks to the list and categorized the questions as follow:

  • Morning Pages:
How many days this week did you do your morning pages
  • Artist Dates:
Did you do your artist date this week? What did you do? How did it feel?
  • Weekly Tasks:
I added the weekly tasks here.
  • Check In:
Did you experience any synchronicity this week? What was it?
Were there any other issues this week that you consider significant for your recovery? Describe them.

Without further a do, let’s have a look at these weeks’ check ins!

Morning Pages

  • How many days this week did you do your morning pages?

Artist Dates

  • Did you do your artist date this week? What did you do? How did it feel?

Weekly Tasks

  1. The biggest lack in my life is harmony.
  2. The greatest joy in my life is music / art.
  3. My largest time commitment is work.
  4. As I play more, I work more?
  5. I feel guilty that I am relaxing.
  6. I worry that I won’t be enough.
  7. If my dreams come true, my family will be proud.
  8. I sabotage myself so people will pay / not pay attention.
  9. If I let myself feel it. I’m angry that I don’t feel?.
  10. One reason I get sad sometimes is being tired / overwhelmed.

One of the favored tricks of blocked creatives is saying no to ourselves. It is astonishing the number of small ways we discover to be mean and miserly with ourselves. When I say this to my students, they often protest that this is not true — that they are very good to themselves. Then I ask them to do this exercise.

List ten things you love and would love to do but are not allowed to do. Your list might look like this: Go dancing. Carry a sketchbook. Roller – skate. Buy new cowboy boots. Streak your hair blond. Go on vacation. Take flying lessons. Move to a bigger place. Direct a play. Take life – drawing class.

Very often, the mere act of writing out your list of forbidden joys breaks down your barriers to doing them. Post your list somewhere highly visible.

  1. Pottery
  2. Kapa Haka
  3. Travel
  4. Make or buy costumes and clothes
  5. Paint with Oils
  6. Study Cultural Anthropology / Arts

One of the best ways we can evade our Censor is to use the technique of speed writing. Because wishes are just wishes. they are allowed to be frivolous (and frequently should be taken very seriously). As quickly as you can. finish the following phrases.

1 – 19. I wish ________________. 20. I most especially wish ________________.

  1. I could do my own thing
  2. to be independent
  3. for infinite resources
  4. I didn’t worry about other people
  5. I was confident
  6. I could dance
  7. to move abroad
  8. to travel
  9. to be safe
  10. to learn how to drive
  11. for health and no pain
  12. for no inconveniences
  13. for a happy and cozy home
  14. for a loving family
  15. for self esteem
  16. for a powerful passport
  17. for powerful indestructive electronics
  18.  comfortable practical good quality fashionable clothes
  19. to be taken care of without worrying about being in debt
  20. I most especially wish for freedom

  • The following tasks explore and expand your relationship to the source. The reason I can’t really believe in a supportive God is… List five grievances. (God can take it.)
  1. I have had such a hard time so far in life
  2. My father doesn’t believe in god
  3. It’s all in my head
  4. Even if there’s a god, my psyche will betray me

  • Starting an Image File: If I had either faith or money I would try… List five desires. For the next week, be alert for images of these desires. When you spot them, buy them, photograph them, draw them, collect them somehow. With these images. begin a file of dreams that speak to you. Add to it continually for the duration of the course.

  2. Study Abroad
  3. Go to an artist / buddhist sanctuary
  4. Become an athlete (earlier than 20)
  5. Become a performer
  • If I were sixty – five and had money. List five postponed pleasures. And again. collect these images. This is a very potent tool. I now live in a house that I imagined for ten years.
  1. Recreational farm house
  2. Altruism travel / peace nobel prize
  3. Eccentric elegant grandma
  4. Gypsy? Moving home
  5. Active and healthy, fit, crafty

  • Ten items I would like to own that I don’t are… And again, you may want to collect these images. In order to boost sales. Experts in sales motivation often teach rookie salesmen to post images of what they would like to own. It works.

  3. Someone or something to clean after me when I craft, hehe

  12. Freedom
  13. A pet
  14. Pet farm
  • Honestly, my favorite creative block is… (TV. overreading. friends. work. rescuing others. over exercise.) You name it. Draw yourself indulging in it.

Social media, depression, trauma, money. Money, time, trauma, security, self esteem, lack of independence.

  • My payoff for staying blocked is. This you may want to explore in your morning pages.

Not doing the work, staying in my comfort zone. Being depressed, not doing what I want to, feel stuck, hot free.

  • The person I blame for being blocked is… Again. use your pages to mull on this.

Father, parents, family, society.
